Parallax is the apparent displacement of a thing when it is observed from two different positions. The thing seems to move. In truth, the observer has moved.

Hold a finger in front of your face. Close one eye, then the other. The finger appears to jump against the background. It has not actually shifted. The shift belongs to your vantage point, and yet that false motion tells you something real.

What looks like movement is, in fact, information. Near objects slide more. Distant objects slide less. Out of that tiny disagreement between one line of sight and another, depth emerges. Distance emerges. Structure emerges.

Astronomy depends on this. The stars are too remote to touch and too silent to question directly, but they can still be measured through parallax. Earth appears in one place in its orbit, then in another. A nearby star seems to lean ever so slightly against the fixed dark. That almost-imperceptible lean becomes a calculation. The calculation becomes distance. What was once only seen can now be known more clearly.

There is something severe about the idea. The world does not volunteer its depth. It has to be drawn out by motion, by comparison, by refusing to trust a single angle as the whole truth. One view is impression. A second view begins to become measure.

So the word itself carries a certain weight. It suggests that reality is often flatter than it appears at first glance, until perspective disturbs it. Then the hidden distance announces itself. Then the scene stops being a surface.
